Update — Trayvon Martin and the Christian Perspective

The trial of Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman has finally come to an end. George was found not guilty on all accounts. As with all racially charged trials that have this kind of media exposure, the verdict was polarizing. What is sad is that the world, and even Christians, have taken up arms on both sides. Millions of people, empowered by their particular demagogue, ready to do battle on every detail. In this instant world, it takes only seconds to find someone to support a particular viewpoint, but— what about THE truth?

THE truth is this—there is an enemy to all mankind, and ultimately this fallen, defeated being, helped put this tragedy in motion. Satan and his kingdom of darkness, lying behind the shadows, the prince of the power of the air, always scheming, not only helped put things in motion, but delighted in the tragic outcome.

Ephesians 2:2

2 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— (ESV)

The devil wants to plant seeds of hate, resentment, divisiveness, bitterness, and racial strife, and if you are a son of disobedience or an undiscerning Christian, those seeds will take root.

Now when you combine these evil spirits with the sinful desires of the heart–stand back–because darkness is about to smother the place. It’s a wonder there isn’t MORE death and destruction infiltrating this planet because the bible says the heart of man is desperately evil; not just evil, but desperately evil.

Jeremiah 17:9 “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? (NLT)

The heart is truly tricky. We can be full of the devil, and yet, consider ourselves to be all good. We really don’t know just how wicked we are. In essence, even the Apostle Paul said , “I don’t judge myself, my conscience is clear, but that still doesn’t clear me.”

3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. 4 For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. 5 Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God. (ESV)

I say all that to ask this, What does the world need from Christians in light of this rising tide of darkness? No matter what you think happened to Trayvon and George that awful night, or whether the law is just or not, (I personally believe the Stand Your Ground law needs to be re-thought, among other things) you have to agree that there is a rising tide of moral decay that has affected all levels and pillars in society. No stone has been left unturned, everything is being judged and exposed for what it is.

So I ask again, what does this world need? It needs Saints that believe in fasting and prayer. It needs those that will resist the wiles of the devil and submit themselves to God. It needs those that know that the war most be won in the Spirit, and then the natural. The world needs those Christians that know only God can change the hearts of fallen man by the Light of heaven. It needs those who know that Jesus has broken the power of darkness, and made an open spectacle of the leader of it.

The truth is, Christians are uniquely equipped to work with the Ancient of Days and the Creator and Sustainer of all life. We are the only ones equipped to kick in the very gates of hell itself.

Matt 16:18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (ESV)
