Self Deception Series: Attaching God’s Name to Our Endeavors

Psalm 50: 16-21 (ESV From Biblehub.com)

16 But to the wicked God says: “What right have you to recite my statutes or take my covenant on your lips? 17 For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you. 18 If you see a thief, you are pleased with him, and you keep company with adulterers.

19 “You give your mouth free rein for evil, and your tongue frames deceit. 20 You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your own mother’s son. 21 These things you have done, and I have been silent; you thought that Ic was one like yourself. But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you.

The passage above is for unbelievers, but it should also serve as a reminder to us and our fallen nature that is active and in rebellion against God. We think as Christians we have ourselves in check, but in reality we lack appropriate reverence for God so we simply presume His blessing on many of our endeavors. We need to be more sober minded and humble when we initiate anything we beleive God is calling us to do.

Sadly they will hear the dreaded words, “I never knew you.” from our Lord on the Day of His return. They were vicitims of their own self deception and we too suffer from the same ailment. It’s no longer enough to call Satan a master deceiver because in reality we are the masters of self decetpion. It is interwoven into our fallen God denying nature and we can never be delivered without divine aid.

I believe in all of the forces of darkness that the Bible clearly speaks of in the scriptures but I also believe this verse found in James 1:13-15

13Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.14But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.15Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

We are tempted constantly and we choose to partake in many sins as we journey through this decaying world. More often than not, unbelievers see our witness as something to use against us and nothing more. This should not lead to a witness worship were we become fake and lack authenticity. As we mature in Christ we understand the Father’s love and grace is the only thing that can break sin in our lives and we share this. This is why it is so important to take ownership of our trangressions and not change the Gospel or bring God’s name into our endeavors so eagerly. The world needs to hear ,”My bad.” and “That’s on me not God.” Let’s set Him apart from our self-seeking endeavors.
