My ancestors were cruelly abducted from their homeland and forced into centuries of servitude and slavery. They never shared in the material blessings of this country and so they never prospered in a worldly sense. Yet we know some of them were godly and devout in spite of their stations in life. God loved them no less. He wept for sure and intervened in time to rescue a people with unknown roots and national origins. He commanded those who believed in Him to move forward and forgive in spite of the injustice they would face. He offered eternity to those who would believe. Some did and some did not. That’s my history.

Each of you have your own history and many are no noubt privileged enough to receive resources and recognition because of your gifts, character and abilities. When we demonstrate excellence in some field, God and man reward us. That said, it is not so easily discernable how the percentages weigh out in regards to who does the rewarding, 70% man’s rewards — 30% God’s or vice versa.

I am learning and being taught daily about contentment and true rewards. I also feel that many modern day evangelicals have made human rewards and God’s the same, whether purposefully or inadvertantly through bad theology. We must stop associating the benefits of living in a rich nation with eternal blessings or worse yet, nominal Christianity with authentic faith and blessings. I have really only found joy in serving and loving others.
