The Wind and Water: The Purpose of Erosion

There are many interesting parallels in nature and spiritual life. Erosion is
one such phenomenon. Erosion is defined as “a wearing away or removal or the
process by which something is worn away” The Spirit of God is the sovereign
third Person in our trinity. He is fully God, immortal and unblemished in all
His dealings with man. He remains with us to fulfill the purpose that God has
called us to. He is likened to wind and water in the scriptures and we know that
both of these forces erode the surface of things and exposes what lies
beneath (This introduction will help me illustrate my point.)

I have learned (and scripture and experience confirm this truth) surface things have
little significance to God. Most of you reading this thread should be able to
testify to this.  We often miss what God is doing by looking at the surface of
things. People’s gifts, statements, race, culture, socio-economic status and
achievements.  Status – Ascribed status (stuff you are born with) and achieved

We attract people
and build networks with different gifts and achievements and feel secure in
them- and suddenly – God begins to do something. He moves us in a different
direction, or works in some other area of our life and our surface achievements,
status  and networks don’t matter as much in light of these jolts to our system. When we get a report from the doctor, lose a loved one, marriage, job or ability we become humbled in an instant and suddenly we are reduced to what we really are -frail creatures in need of our creator. When this happens, it is not always a bad thing, it can bring a good thing about, that being dependency on Him.

Sometimes erosion comes with the force of a hurricane; wind and rain forcefully remove everything from the surface and expose us in the blink of an eye.  At other times it is a gradual erosion that takes place over  years, even decades. Whatever the case may be with you my friend, I have two words for you to remember, spiritual stamina. You are going to need it on the journey. Take heed, wind and water are symbols of the Holy Spirit and how He works and directs in our lives. Rest assured, the best is yet to come as we yield, in this life and the next. Stay staunch.
